A Mobile App for Your Daily Marine Work - Must Have or Nonsense?

If you’re anything like me, you probably can’t imagine your life without a mobile device like Smart Phones or Tablets. Well, it’s not surprising, is it?

Our constant companions allow us to network with family, friends, and business contacts whenever and wherever we want – awesome!

 

Speaking of Smart Phones and Tablets, there is another world of technologies and functionalities designed to make our personal and business lives simpler. Perhaps you’ve already utilized the applications (or Apps) technology by checking the nearby restaurants, getting information on the public transportation schedules or reading the latest messages from your preferred newspapers? I certainly have.

To be honest, I was a bit sceptical first. Do apps really bring value to my life?

I came to the conclusion some of them do.

Gathering the right information I need for my daily tasks quickly and easily, getting in contact with my peers and structuring my work day better by using organizing tools – for sure, I am definitely benefiting from those apps.

But they have to be well structured and most important they need to have the right content.

 

Using all of these mobile applications make my life easier. I wonder if you – as a ship builder, ship owner/operator, engineer or captain – would benefit from a Caterpillar Marine Power Systems mobile application, too?

What do you think such an application should be able to do?

What information and what functions would you like the Caterpillar Marine application to provide to you? Would you be able to use it on board at all?

Or, do you think it would be just one of a thousand other useless applications?

When I think of a mobile device, I think of WiFi, Bluetooth, or GSM connected device.  On board a vessel, with respect to engine data, their usefulness may depend on size of the vessel.  On small vessels, there is very little benefit.  The hardwired engine monitors and alarms can be quickly accessed.

 

On medium sized vessels there may be some usefulness to have such a device.  There may be remote locations such a tower that has limited engine monitors. 

 

On a large vessel where the Captain or Engineer may be several decks or feet away from hardwired engine monitors, a mobile device with engine monitoring app may be extremely useful.

 

Access to on board data is the most useful when the mobile device is used off board of the vessel.  Monitoring tank levels, fuel levels and battery status along with other vessel system alarms would be very useful on any type of vessel to owner/operators. 

 

Engine data on a mobile app may be useful to fleet owners/operators that need to know how the vessels are being operated.  For a single owner/operator vessel, engine only mobile app would not be very useful.

Are you alraedy using your mobile device for your daily work?

If so, what do you like the most and the least about it?

I do not believe that a monitoring app would serve much need. For the most when I, as a watchkeeping engineer, need access to monitoring info (e.g exhaust temps, oil pressures, load levels, etc) I am never very far from the hard wired monitoring stations.

 

I would think an app with access to engine manuals and FAQ's or this discussion forum would be very relevant. Filtered to only the engine type relevant for me. It would be very clever if I could make a serch on-site for e.g "tacho pick-up problems" and see if any other users had had experience with the same problem, and what they did. But alas most deep sea vessels do not have WiFi strong enough to cover the engine spaces (if they have any at all), and a mobile device needs connectivity or a large storage capacity and sync'ing to be of any real use.

I would like a Wireless monitoring system, an App like the Cat IT tool for Iphone or Ipad, with a remote adapter on the plug in on the Cat Engine also the possibility to get the operating license from Caterpillar.

My expectation on the smartphone applications would be for

1) quick glance on the status of the systems of my interests at my will

2) Alert application that is not another alert SMS kind off. this should connect me with the right resources also.

3) A activity progress status indicator. have you seen Domino's app that shows the status of your orders

4) A data collecting tool (digital pictures, barcode reader, address resoultion, etc.)

5) A part identifier. like an image search tool
