Re: Cat C9DI Cylinder head crack

Hi Patrick,

It was found to be fuel injector failure, latter dig some research on the old records and found few years back - same unit fuel injector had failed but luckily that time cylinder head didnt fail.

Re: Cat C9DI Cylinder head crack

do you have cooling water heater on the engine?

what is the engine standby cooling temperature?

Do you let the enigne cool down before shutting down?

Re: Cat C9DI Cylinder head crack

Hi Patrick,

Subject engine is used as emergency generator onboard a vessel. Engine was running satisfactorily until we found the leakage due to crack. We had opened up cylinder head and found unit 3 injector failed. Much carbon deposits on the exhaust passage.

Quite strange is cat service personal needs to attend to reset it.

Re: Cat C9DI Cylinder head crack

following reasons are possible:

too little warmup time, or too much load on cold engine.

not enough cooling down before stopping engine.

restriction in cooling system.

running with low coolant level.

what is your application?

Cat C9DI Cylinder head crack

Wonder what could be the reason causing minor hair line crack on the cylinder head near exhaust gas area. Any suggestions to check !!
