Also, remember that the connection is not what determines the exhaust back pressure.  You have to determine if the 18 inch pipe at whatever length you will be using will accommodate the engineexhaust flow volume without exceeding the back pressure limit.  It might be that the G3616 A4 exhaust pipe size might have to be larger (including the catalyst) to keep from exceeding the limit.  With this in mind, it is easy to see how Cat has decided to use one exhaust outlet size.

The technical information for the G3600 A4 states that the maximum exhaust back pressure is 12 inches of water for all four engine models.  While I haven't looked into the numbers and calculated the differences, I would say that Cat has determined that the 18 inch exhaust size will not cause the maximum back pressure to be exceeded. 

 

When Cat states this maximum back pressure, this is not a shutdown value but it will impact the fuel economy, maybe the emissions and the exhaust temperature.  Many times with the G360 A3, the additional restriction caused by adding an oxidation catalyst increases the normal back pressure near the A3 back pressure limit.  So I don't see anything by using the same size exhaust for both the G3612 A4 and the G3616 A4.

I'm surprised to see the same size engine outlet given the large difference in exhaust flow rate between the G3616 / G3612.

The information states that the G3612 A4 and G3616 A4 both are sized for 18 inch exhaust.  The attaching flange bolt cirle is 20.87 inch diameter; showing 0.54 inch bolt hole size,16 holes.  So this would be a common 18 inch industry exhaust connection to accommodate commonly available adapter flanges.

This thread has been very helpful. I've been looking to confirm that the 3600 series engines with the ADEM4 rating have (1) inlet connection per turbo, and (1) outlet connection per engine. Based on Al's initial response it appears that this is so.

 

I also want to confirm the exhaust connection's flange size for both the 3612 / 3616 ADEM4 rated engines since they have been updated from dual exhaust outlet to single exhaust outlet.
