If you did not have CAT ET, I would think that you could get away w/ the static timing.

Timing calibration is done through Cat Electronic Technician with a probe in the side of the block, which reads a slot in the crankshaft counterweight. Calibration only needs to be done if  the gear train has been disassembled or if the engine ECM would need to be replaced.
