Landscaper Pro Tip: Time to Make Your Own Equipment Budget

by New member JohnJanes on ‎06-15-2018 09:41 AM

CATBC67041_2.jpgSummer is here and landscaping projects are top-of-mind. That’s why we decided to catch up with Landscape Management Network (LMN) founder, Mark Bradley, and our friends at Cat Financial to hear more about why it’s important for landscape business owners to have their own equipment budgets. Bradley started us off with a great point: “Some of the most common methods people use to incorporate their equipment costs aren’t based on their own expenses. If you’re guilty of this, don’t worry. You’re not alone.” So why do you need your own equipment budget to price your work? Well, let’s take a look …

It’s Based on YOUR Numbers!

The problem with using a dealer’s rental fees or your competition’s hourly rates to price your equipment is that it’s not based on your numbers. The dealer and your competition are both basing their pricing on different job sizes, overhead amounts and quantities of stock. They may also have cheaper rates on certain expenses, such as bulk material purchases or equipment financing.

CATBC67041_3.jpgBy setting up your own equipment budget, you can be confident that the numbers you’re using are going to make you profitable. This is the most critical reason for setting up your own budget and the first step to knowing what you need to charge your clients to cover your costs, recover overhead and make some profit.

It’s Still Important to Charge for Paid-Off Equipment

Another common mistake is to stop charging for your equipment once it’s been paid off. If you’re not charging for the use of this equipment, when repairs or new equipment are needed, they’re going to come from your profit. An equipment budget will make sure your owned equipment is included in your estimate. This way, expenses aren’t forgotten and you’re prepared when repairs and replacements are needed.

Your Equipment Budget Can Guide Purchase Decisions

Lastly, your equipment budget will help you when it comes time to make new purchase decisions. It will allow you to see how the additional equipment is going to affect your bottom line and what you would need to charge to make your money back on that piece of equipment.

CATBC67041_1.jpgAlong with referencing your equipment budget when making new purchase decisions, it’s also a good idea to research available tools online to help you understand how to incorporate new equipment into your estimates. Some manufacturers’ captive financing companies offer a myriad of helpful resources, including:

Without a budget, it’s nearly impossible to know how much profit you’re making off your equipment or even how much to charge in order to break even. Every construction project has to have an estimated budget before the project starts. Any construction organization cannot work fluently without chalking out their budget. The blog perfectly explains the necessity of having planned your project budgets neatly to avoid undesirable financial crisis and to keep a track of profit.
