Underground Utilities and Landscape Industries Optimistic at Fall Trade Shows

The fall trade show season has been positive for the construction, utility and landscaping industries. In October, Caterpillar participated at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Expo (ICUEE) and the Green Industry & Equipment Expo (GIE + Expo)—both in Louisville, Kentucky. We’ve asked Roy Brookhart, product and applications specialist for Caterpillar and On the Level Blogger, and Jason Becker, national association manager for Caterpillar, to share their experiences at the shows for today’s blog post.

ICUEE 1.jpgInternational Construction and Utility Equipment Expo- Roy Brookhart
The 2013 ICUEE gave utility contractors and municipalities an opportunity to learn about new technologies, insights and trends affecting the utilities industry. Nearly 20 Cat® product experts joined the Caterpillar booth to help answer questions, provide machine demonstrations and encourage attendee participation.

Since a large number of people who attend this show are government employees or work closely with various government utility and municipality groups, ICUEE attendance was expected to fall when the government shut down at the beginning of October. Despite the shutdown, the show was well attended. Many people made an effort to record information gathered at the booths and training sessions to share with others who may have missed the show.

The Cat product experts stayed busy at the booth. The more popular displays were the Premier Oilfield Hydrovac Truck, Cat 299D Compact Track Loader and the Cat 420F Backhoe Loader. Attendees lined up to try two machine challenges. The first was a timed compact track loader course that had to be completed in reverse using the new integrated rearview camera. The second challenged backhoe loader operators to move pumpkins with the stick mounted thumb where operator finesse played a key role. Attendees were also given the opportunity to preview three hydraulic excavators, while others received customized solution packages from our product experts.

Overall, the atmosphere was positive and energetic.  Trending questions included those related to Tier 4 machines, performance and new features. Many attendees indicated concern for the immediate future as they considered fleet optimization strategies and additional machines for a stronger fleet.

Green Industry & Equipment Expo- Jason Becker

The 2013 GIE + Expo and conference offered attendees the opportunity to explore the newest products and services, learn from industry leaders and discover market trends.GIE + Expo and conference attendance improved over last year’s events. Expo landscaper attendance was up 16 percent, while dealer attendance increased by six percent.  Conference and training session attendance was up by more than 20 percent over last year.

GIE_4.jpgIncreased attendance boosted demand for new products and education from dealers, landscapers and leaders in the green industry. The Caterpillar-sponsored training sessions were well attended and the Caterpillar booth attracted long lines of attendees eager to try the newest skid steer loader and mini excavator.

As a gold-level sponsor for the conference, Caterpillar hosted the National Awards of Landscape Excellence again this year.  Jason Becker served as emcee for the event, which recognized more than 100 North American landscape projects. The LaurelRock Company was the big winner claiming four top honors including the Judges Award, Audience Choice Award, Sustainable Company Award and the Grand Award on its Modern Homestead project for residential maintenance. Other awards were given to winners in the maintenance and installation categories for both residential and commercial projects.

Overall, the atmosphere was positive and optimistic—especially in the green industry and landscaping groups. Many contractors indicated a backlog in business thanks to a wet spring and exhibited an optimistic (although cautious) outlook.  From strong irrigation demand out west to new housing developments in the southwest- it appears as though the optimism points to rising work levels.

Both events indicated positive expectations for the construction, utility and landscaping industries, and an optimistic outlook from industry leaders and professionals. Packed training sessions made it clear that attendees were eager to learn new concepts, and the long lines of people waiting to demo the latest equipment and services showed the crowd’s enthusiasm. All-in-all it was a successful pair of trade shows indicating a promising season for all three industries.

It depends on what type of landscaping you do. A lot of equipment is very loud and you need to have good earmuffs or ear plugs. If you work with trees at all you need a helmet as branches can fall easily. Fresh, wet wood is a lot heavier then most people think. Goggles or a face shield are also very helpful, especially if you work with a chipper Student Assignment Writing Service.
