Google just made it easier to compare any two smartphones

Google is trialing a new Search feature that allows you to compare how two smartphones stack up against each other on paper, without having to dig around for their respective spec sheets.

Typing something like “Google Pixel 2 XL vs. iPhone X into Search will generate a table comparing specifications, pricing and customer reviews, reports The Next Web, before adding that the tool currently only works with the latest smartphones.

In the future, however, you should be able to use the instrument to research various products from a host of different categories, ranging from cameras to computers, though there’s no word on when that functionality will arrive.

The feature, which debuted on November 4, appears to be exclusive to a small subset of users in the United States, but it should expand to customers in additional regions – including the United Kingdom – in the not-too-distant future.

The end of the traditional tech blog?

This news will likely prove to be worrisome for blogs that rely on head-to-head comparisons to keep the lights on, as plugging a simple term into Google is a lot more convenient than visiting an independent website.

The blogs have the upper hand for now, though, as Google’s tool can only compare two devices – but that will inevitably change in the future, leaving webmasters with the challenge of finding new ways to attract users.
