Re: MAK 43 Piston Skirts Cracking

Dear JW,

Cracks in M43 piston skirts were noticed only at the engines of your power plant by now. This requires a deeper investigation.

In this regard please contact your service support at CPGS (Caterpillar Power Generation Systems in Kiel. The piston skirts are to be returned for investigation. The piston manufacturer will check them and will create a report. You will be informed by CPGS. But I suppose this happened already.

Kind regards, Zement

Re: MAK 43 Piston Skirts Cracking

One of the engine serial # is 65157 and it has 58,000-hours. This unit had four cracked skirts which were found by MAK & Kolbenschmidt during a follow up to another skirt failure.

Re: MAK 43 Piston Skirts Cracking

Dear JW,

Could you please give us more information on the engines, like serial number etc.

This would help to create a response for you.

Best regards

MAK 43 Piston Skirts Cracking

Between 45,000-hours and 60,000 hours this plant has found 8 cracked piston skirts on different engines. The crack starts on the inside of the skirt in the area of the piston pin boss.

Has anyone else had this problem?
