The Caterpillar D3B crawler tractor was introduced in 1979. It was manufactured in Japan only.
Features

The D3B has a 3204 direct injection, four-cylinder engine producing 65 flywheel horsepower(FWHP). It comes standard with sealed and lubricated tracks (SALT) and powershift transmission.

Configurations

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 56 inches (142 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has a 65-inch (165-cm) track gauge. Both configurations are available with three speeds forward, three reverse or three speeds forward, one reverse.

Standard configuration tractors with three speeds forward, three reverse have a 27Y serial number prefix. Standard tractors with three speeds forward, one reverse have a 23Y prefix.

LGP configuration tractors with three speeds forward, three reverse have a 28Y prefix. LGP tractors with three speeds forward, one reverse have a 24Y prefix.

In 1982, Caterpillar added a modified water pump, beginning with 23Y01294, 24Y01225, 27Y01716, and 28Y00928.

In 1986, Caterpillar modified the dozer assembly by increasing pin and bushing hardness to extend its life, beginning with 23Y02092, 24Y02085, 27Y03845, and 28Y01696.

Also in 1986, Caterpillar introduced two new D3B units, with 2PC and 3YC prefixes. The 2PC has a turbocharged engine producing 101 FWHP. The 3YC is not turbocharged. Both have a five speeds forward, four reverse direct drive transmission.

Production of the 2PC and 3YC ended in 1987.

In 1987, Caterpillar made modifications to extend the wear life of the undercarriage, beginning with 23Y02508, 24Y02398, 27Y05050, and 28Y01992.

The Caterpillar D3B was replaced by the Caterpillar D3C.

Production of the D3B ended in 1988. Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 15,800 Caterpillar D3B crawler tractors have been produced.
