Any idea if it's worthwhile to use the 7C-3095 as a replacement? Or is it just buying trouble?

New to Caterpillar.
Want to replace coolant regulator/thermostat. Looked at CAT parts online and it identifies part number 247-7133 for my C12 #: 2KS67672
Fair enough but buzz on other boards suggests that some CAT engines have more than one regulator. Called CAT help line in Peoria. Nice, helpful fellow assures me that there is but one regulator in my C12 and the part number is 7C-3095. OK, found a new 7C-3095 online and ordered. Received as described in nice, new CAT box sporting part number 7C-3095.
Look at regulator and it has "CALTHERM USA" and "7C-3095" stamped on body and "88 C ", among other nubmers, stamped on the copper plunger. Caltherm rings a bell so I dig around and find buzz that says 7C-3095 has been replaced by 247-7133 and that Caltherm had supplied some defective regulators to CAT. Also, references to C12 regulators are often plural, as in more than one per engine.
So questions arise:
1. Is there only one regulator in a C12 engine with my serial number 2KS67672?
2. Is there a way to determine if my Caltherm regulator is defective?
Thanks in advance for info.
