Do you have the CDVR PC software? Can you connect to the CDVR and monitor the field amps and field volts? Depending on your actual generator end it will be between 10 and 20VDC to make nominal voltage at no load. Full load field volts should be around 40VDC.
Check the OverExcitation settings, should be something like 90 volts and 10 amps for 10 seconds.
Do you have a CDVR service manual? Have you followed the troubleshooting steps in it?

please give any advice to me..
i have using caterpillar 3512 generator from last 4 months in my company. my company recently purchased(second hand) from zahid tractors,dammam,saudi arabia.over excitation shut down problem started from last 2 months.fault occurs after 1hrs,10 min sometimes 8hrs no time..i have checked all connectors,fuses,diodes and exciter resistance(13ohms).IR value for exciter field >400Mohms@500v.but problem not rectify.finally cat service engineer came and he said CDVR problem,replace with new. my company purchased (12000SR)new CDVR from CAT service and installed by cat engg.again over excitation problem occur after 2 days.again cat engg said exciter winding problem.but my company manager angry with this problems.cat service engg not comig to my site.please give any sugession.
