Depending on your rating and your MDO supply system, likely you won't have any real problems.  You will likely see an increase in smoke, the fuel consumption will be higher than expected, and the turbo match may not be real good.  Look for higher than expected exhaust temps in the mid load range.  For best fuel system service life try to maintain the approximate same fuel viscosity to the fuel delivery system as teh HFO system did.  Sometimes systems with MDO alternative to HFO didn't do the right amount of fuel cooling and the MDO got too hot after extended run times, causing some fuel system problems.

Hope that helps,

I have a heavy fuel oil MaK engine. Does anybody know if I can operate the engine with MDO for a longer period of time? Do I have to make any changes to the system? Would appreciate to get any thoughts on that. Thanks!
