Talk to me about generators...

We don't have power outages often thankfully, but these days when we do, they tend to be for several hours and whilst we have a 20kVA UPS with a sizeable battery pack, we "only" get about 1.5hrs out of this.

Last outage we lost some older kit when the power came back which we simply put down to the age of the kit.

Whilst the kit was still under support and was replaced, it raised the question of how we can minimise the risk of this kind of thing happening.

One option is to have tighter support contracts, but when stuff is under 4 hour onsite it's not always possible to get better.

Another option is to have HA pairs, or a spare of all your key kit, which is of course also nice to have.

I can't help but think that at that kind of load, a generator is a pretty normal next step too, or something that at the very least we should be talking about even if it's deemed not worth the expense vs. the cost to the business of the occasional few hours downtime.

What are your experiences with generators? Is it considered "normal" to have one?

What issues are there?
